Black Children Did Not Cause Decline in Trick-or-Treating

Claim

Trick-or-treating has declined because Black children are going to white neighborhoods to get candy.

Fact

There is no evidence to back the claim that Black children are to blame for the decline of trick-or-treating.

Multiple surveys suggest that door-to-door trick-or-treating has been declining for nearly two decades and was accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

A survey from the University of Chicago found a 50% decline in the number of households planning to go door-to-door from 2019 to 2020, the first Halloween during the pandemic.

Surveys from subsequent years suggest that door-to-door trick-or-treating never fully rebounded, with a USA Today online survey finding that 74% of those surveyed in 2023 saw fewer trick-or-treaters at their door than the previous year.

One possible explanation for the decrease in door-to-door trick-or-treating is the increased popularity of events where parents gather together in one specific spot to hand out candy instead of having kids knock on doors.
