Under the new “public charge” rule set to go into effect on September 18, immigration officers have more discretion when determining if someone will likely rely on public benefits. This determination can be used to deny green cards.

Advocates are concerned that the public charge rule could discourage people who are eligible for benefits, like citizens and permanent residents living in mixed-status homes, from applying for the benefits they need.
