There is no effort to impose the principles of Sharia or Islamic law on the residents of Texas.
This type of fearmongering is often used to support legislation that targets the individual religious freedoms of Muslims, who make up only about 2% of Texas’ population.
Analysis
There is no evidence that Muslims seek to impose Sharia on anyone in the United States, especially non-Muslims. “Sharia law” is largely a misnomer, as Sharia isn’t a single codified legal system that could replace American law. It is a broad set of religious and ethical principles derived from the Quran and the Hadith (the records of the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings, deeds, and sayings), which govern personal conduct, prayer, dietary practices, family matters, and charitable obligations. In this sense, it is analogous to halakha, the body of religious law followed by Orthodox Jews, or canon law as observed by Catholics.
The sharia law conspiracy targets the religious practices of Muslim Americans, which is used as a means of scaremongering. Like the religious beliefs and practices of other faith communities, the religious beliefs and practices of Muslim Americans are protected under the First Amendment.
